Tad’s Story

Denali is the highest mountain in North America and regarded as one of the most challenging climbs in the world.

  • 20,310 ft. (6,190 m.) peak

  • 3-week expedition

  • 13,500 ft. of elevation gain

Denali is more than a mountain.
It’s a comeback from death’s door.

On December 23, 2021, Tad’s life changed forever.

He would never move the same again.

After a serious car crash, Tad suffered severe lacerations to his internal organs, complete breaks in his right arm, and total destruction of his right knee.

He spent 21 days in the hospital.

And underwent more than five separate operations.

Once discharged from the hospital, he spent another 2 months in a wheelchair.

It would be a long road to recovery.

He experienced significant muscle atrophy in his broken leg.

Due to nerve damage, even with progressive physical therapy, the muscle tissue never returned.

But he wouldn’t be stopped.

For two years, Tad worked with diligence and purpose to regain function on the right side of his body.

He began setting physical goals as a way to keep making progress.

First, he completed a sprint triathlon in Miami. It took nearly three hours. Dead last and in excruciating pain, this moment set the stage for all that would come.

In November 2023, we moved into our campervan, which we have been living in since.

Since then, together, we have hiked hundreds of miles and logged thousands of feet of elevation gain.

Every step with one goal: Stand on top of the highest peak in North America.

We are saving and raising funds to help us reach this goal. If you’re interested in supporting us and Denali Volunteer Rescue, please donate.
